Temperatures across Japan are gradually dropping and cooler days are becoming more and more common in late September!
However, in the lake Akan area where "Kamuy Lumina" is held, we better say it is cold here!

Daytime temperatures often drop below 20 degrees, and at night and early time in the morning it often drops to 4-5 degrees!

Amazing Hokkaido! Autumn arrives the earliest in Japan.

"Red leaves" are always one of the most popular features in Japan during fall.

With Hokkaido’s magnificent nature and spectacular scenery, you can tell that it is a paradise for enjoying the stunning sceneries of red leaves.

In this episode, we would like to introduce the stunning red leaves to sightseeing spots in Teshikaga Town, a neighboring town to the Lake Akan area.

If you are a photography enthusiast, be sure to check it out!

Feel the power of the volcano and enjoy the red leaves!

Teshikaga is a small town which is located next to the Lake Akan area.

Part of the town is included in Akan-Mashu National Park and magnificent natural sceneries are waiting for you!

It is also a very popular destination for tourists, as it is only about an hour's drive from the Lake Akan area.

If we were to mention a particularly unique place in Teshikaga town, we must talk about Mt. Io!

Mt. Io is a volcano where a lot of sulfur is extracted (IO means sulfur in Japanese).

Although it is no longer being mined, it is known as a popular sightseeing spot.

It is also one of the most precious places in the world because you can see the hot fumaroles and experience the environment with sulfur smell directly from a close distance.

The sulfuric gasses in the area limit the variety of plants that grow in the vicinity, but in fall, you can enjoy the view of broadleaf trees as they change colors!

Kawayu Onsen is located near Mt. IO and is known as a strong acidic hot spring.

Why don't you experience this acidic hot spring, which is strong enough to dissolve an iron nail in just half a month!

Of course, there is no problem with normal bathing, but if you have a chronic illness, please inquire with the local staff just in case!

The acidic environment here is said to have caused the electrical appliances of nearby accommodations to break down, giving us a glimpse of how this town is affected by the "power of the volcano”.

Kawayu Onsen offers not only a one-day hot spring, but also a free footbath!

It would be nice to take a relaxing soak while enjoying the scenery of red leaves outside.

Enjoy the panoramic scenery of the biggest caldera lake in Japan!

If you switch on Google Maps, you will see two large lakes in Teshikaga Town.

The larger one is called Lake Kussharo, which is also the largest caldera lake in Japan.

There are many scenic spots along Lake Kussharo, but this time we would like to introduce "Bihoro Country road Observatory" where you can take panoramic photos!

Bihoro Country road Observatory is about a 30-minute drive from Teshikaga Town.

After getting off from the parking lot and climbing a few steps, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Kussharo!

You will find yourself taking dozens of pictures of the colorful forests and the vast lake.

If you have a zoom lens, please try taking pictures of the surrounding trees from the observatory!

I am sure you will capture some best shots!

In our next episode, we will introduce some cool spots to enjoy the great red leaves scenery in the area of lake Akan. Stay tuned!
